Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Sport

Welcome from Chair

We are proud to be a part of the College of Education and Professional Studies and to have stellar faculty, students, and alumni. On behalf of all of these constituents, thank you for your interest in our Department and our programs. I encourage you to browse our website and learn about our Department and programs.

The Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Sport has been an integral part of the ºÚÁÏÌìÌà for more than fifty years. The Department offers an Alabama state approved teacher education program in Health and Physical Education as well as dual certification program in both Health and Physical Education. The Department also offers non-teaching programs in Health Promotion, Exercise Science, Sport Management and Recreation Studies, and Recreational Therapy. The Department offers a University-wide physical activity program. Several health, activity, and recreation related courses are popular with non-majors from most of the Colleges within the University. We are housed in the Health, Kinesiology, and Sport Building or Jaguar Gym, which also serves the Department of Athletics.

The Department faculty is comprised of professionals from a variety of academic fields who have great interest in student achievement and scientific advancement. Faculty members are actively involved with publishing in regional, national, and international refereed journals, presentations to professional organizations, and regularly participate in workshops and conferences. Faculty members are also active in some of the most respected professional organizations in our field which include the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), Atlantic Marketing Association (AMA), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), North American Society for Sports Management (NASS), and the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN). Several members of the department have published book chapters, written grants, and serve on editorial boards and as reviewers of national journals.

The Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Sport has assisted the University in achieving accreditation from the Alabama State Department of Education, the ºÚÁÏÌìÌÃern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and is recognized as an approved education program in Sport and Fitness Conditioning by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Sport at the ºÚÁÏÌìÌÃ!
