Anchoring Success: Mitchell College of Business' Supply Chain Program is Advancing Port Management Education
Posted on March 11, 2025 by Amanda Akey

The Mitchell College of Business supply chain and logistics management major is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for successful careers in supply chain-related fields. Supply chain and logistics management employment opportunities are wide and varied, and the need for educated professionals is particularly acute in the Gulf Coast region.
Mobile, home of the ºÚÁÏÌìÌÃ, is a hub for logistics, transportation,
purchasing, warehousing and supply chain-related opportunities. As the supply chain
sector of the regional economy expands through organizations such as Austal, Airbus,
Amazon and a host of small- and medium-sized firms, along with major expansions at
the Alabama State Port Authority, the demand for supply chain management and logistics
talent is heightening annually.
Mobile's prime location on the Gulf Coast has ideally positioned the city for maritime
trade. To prepare graduates for this ever-evolving industry, Mitchell College’s port
management class (SCL 352), taught by Dr. Peter Simonson, Assistant Professor of Marketing,
Supply Chain Management, and Analytics, has expanded its offering to provide students
with specialized training and certification. Students who pass all modules of SCL
352 will receive a Marine Terminal Operator certificate through the International
Association of Maritime and Port Executives. ºÚÁÏÌìÌà is the first university in the
country to offer this certification to undergraduate students. Additionally, ºÚÁÏÌìÌÃ
and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives recently entered
into an agreement to continue to work together on developing and providing professional
education for professionals in maritime and port industries.
The Mitchell College supply chain program is just one example of how the University
of ºÚÁÏÌìÌà Alabama is strategically developing programs that provide educational opportunities
that are advancing careers and supporting regional industries.
