Dr. Hayden Alford graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. While at VMI, he was a full-scholarship member of the Division I FCS football team serving as both quarterback and punter for four years. Upon graduating from the Virginia Military Institute, he was awarded the Dave Hart Post-Graduate Scholarship from the 黑料天堂ern Conference. What does Dr. Alford like most about being a resident at 黑料天堂 Alabama?

What most attracted me to 黑料天堂 Alabama were the genuine relationships among the residents and faculty. This program stood out from all others I interviewed because of its well-balanced academic and clinical training combined with the true family-like atmosphere within the surgery department.

Dr. Victoria Bouillon graduated from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biochemistry, and minors in French and Business. While at CWRU, she was a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity and acted as the creative director and choreographer for the Annual Variety show. She was also channeled her love of dance as a member of the Spartan Dance Crew. While in medical school at University of Florida College of Medicine, she excelled academically and clinically. Given her passion for global health, she led several medical outreach trips to Fonds-Parisien, Haiti and was able to provide essential medical care to thousands of patients. Her research also delved into local health disparities and she played a large part in creating a self-sustaining farm at a local homeless shelter after conducting a nutritional needs assessment demonstrating the stark differences in health of the homeless that were closely linked to subpar nutrition.

What does Dr. Bouillon like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

I remember returning home from my interview at 黑料天堂, and people asked me about it I would reply 鈥渋t was like a giant hug鈥. The family atmosphere was palpable throughout my interview and I appreciated that the residents made it a priority to really get to know applicants. Although I knew that I was one of countless applicants, I felt like a priority during my one on one time, and felt like I got an accurate and complete representation of what 黑料天堂 was all about during my short stay, and it was enough to make me want to stay for good.

Dr. Tyler Kaelin grew up in the Florida panhandle before attending Berry College in Rome, GA. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and minor in Mathematics. He also graduated with honors following the completion of his honors thesis on the 鈥淪ynthesis of a Fluorescent Universal DNA Nucleoside鈥. In 2016, he was awarded a Navy Health Professions Scholarship for medical school at the 黑料天堂. During his time in medical school, Dr. Kaelin helped pioneer the College of Medicine鈥檚 Wellness Program, serving for two years as the student-led initiative鈥檚 first president. As a third-year medical student, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Kaelin was selected to serve on the LCME Accreditation Committee, as well as the Committee for Admissions as a student interviewer. He served as a student leader with the Christian Medical Ministry of 黑料天堂 Alabama, participating in bible studies and medical mission trips to Costa Rica and Rwanda. At graduation, he was awarded -by vote of his classmates- the Medical Alumni Leadership Award 鈥渋n recognition of outstanding leadership of [his] graduating class.鈥 In his free time, he enjoys playing spike ball and volleyball, annual backpacking trips with his twin sister, making pottery, and kayaking the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta.

What does Dr. Kaelin like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

The program is as committed to training excellent surgeons as it is cultivating an environment that fosters respect and builds community. Having completed medical school at 黑料天堂 Alabama, I witnessed firsthand how the residents and faculty have empathy and compassion not only for their patients, but for their peers and department as well. It鈥檚 an honor to find myself among such hard-working and down to earth surgeons and surgeons-in-training.

 

Megan McCaul, M.D.Megan McCaul, M.D.

Dr. Megan McCaul graduated from Westminster College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biochemistry. While at Westminster College she was a member of the women鈥檚 basketball team. Her team received the honor of highest GPA amongst NCAA division 3 women鈥檚 basketball teams for the 2013-2014 season. She was also involved in other campus organizations throughout her undergraduate career. While in medical school at the University of Missouri, she was selected as a chair of the Student Ambassadors, who represent the medical school to the public and welcome incoming students. She graduated from the University of Missouri in May of 2020.

What does Dr. McCaul like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

During the interview process it seemed that everyone was genuinely interested in the people they were recruiting to this program. My conversations with the people here were real conversations, which made me feel very welcome.

 

Loree Thornton, M.D.Loree Thornton, M.D.

Dr. Loree Thornton originally graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in English and a license to teach secondary education. While at CSU, Loree competed on the Women鈥檚 Track and Field team receiving not only many academic honors, but multiple school and Mountain West Conference athletic records, and an NCAA DI championship title and collegiate record in the women鈥檚 hammer throw. Loree went on to compete professionally, winning many national and international competitions and represented the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China as well as served several years on the United State Track and Field Associated as women鈥檚 throw chair representative. Inspired, after retiring from the Olympics, Loree decided to pursue another long term dream of becoming a physician. Loree attended the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for her science prerequisites and matriculated into the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Fall of 2016. While at CUSOM, Loree served in many leadership positions as well as involved in curriculum reform. She was nominated by her peers into Gold Humanism Honor Society for outstanding and compassionate patient care.

In 2020, Dr. Thornton reached her ultimate goal, which she refers to as her second once in a lifetime dream, and matched as a categorical resident into General Surgery Residency at the 黑料天堂.

What does Dr. Thornton like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

When deciding on a program to train as a surgeon, I knew I wanted to train somewhere where I would receive exceptional training, have the ability to match into my desired fellowship, and have quality OR experiences. I wanted to make sure I was in a program that valued its residents and was invested in residents both inside and outside the hospital. I wanted a program where I could see myself working with the people every day for 5 to 7 years. I can safely say, at the interview dinner, I knew I this was my program. On the drive home from the actual interview, I already texted my husband I had found the one.

Dr. Katie Vines graduated from Auburn University with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2013. While at Auburn University, she conducted research in the Department of Nutrition studying the molecular proteins and signaling pathways involved in the diabetic rat brain. This research interest led her to pursue a Master of Science in Nutrition Science after completing her undergraduate studies. She graduated summa cum laude for her graduate degree in 2016 and was later published for her research thesis titled 鈥淭rkA and Insulin Receptor in Streptozotin-Induced Diabetes Rat Brain鈥.

While in medical school at UAB, she shined during her clinical rotations, research, and in student leadership. She received excellent evaluations during her clinical rotations and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society through peer nomination and faculty voting. While conducting research with the Hepatobiliary Transplant Division in the Department of Surgery assessing tumor characteristics as prognostic indicators, she presented her findings at the Academic Surgical Congress in 2017. Her leadership roles included serving as an Orientation Leader, Clinical Skills Examination Evaluator, Introduction to Clinical Medicine Representative, Anatomy Teaching Assistant, and as President of the Surgery Interest Group. She graduated from UAB School of Medicine in 2020.

In 2020, Dr. Vines matched as a preliminary surgery resident into the General Surgery Residency Program at the 黑料天堂. She is interested in all aspects of surgery and is maintaining an open mind to all career paths made available by training in General Surgery.

What does Dr. Vines like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

The people, definitely! Everyone is extremely welcoming, and the faculty are very invested in the education of all of the residents. Residents treat their co-residents as family and are very supportive of each other. All of the staff within the program go above and beyond to aid in the education of residents and make it an ideal environment for training. I have lived in Alabama all my life and knew I wanted to train in the 黑料天堂east for residency. The pre-interview dinner showcased the family-feel of the program and the investment of the faculty to residents. The close proximity to my family, excellent training and operative exposure, and (most importantly) collaborative support by faculty and residents were the factors that made 黑料天堂 stand out.

Shem Blackley, M.D.Shem Blackley, MD

Shem Blackley, M.D., graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in cell/molecular biology. While at Appalachian State University, he was very involved in research, working in a freshwater ecology lab that focused on the ecological impacts of dam creation and removal on rivers in the 黑料天堂eastern United States. He also had his own research project regarding the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and its impact on amphibian population decline in the 黑料天堂ern Appalachians. While attending Wake Forest School of Medicine, Shem was a co-founding member of a school anatomy tutoring group and involved in colorectal research looking at the effect of patient demographics on surgical treatment outcomes of terminal ileitis in Crohn鈥檚 disease. During Shem鈥檚 final year of medical school, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical Honor Society.

What does Dr. Blackley like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama? 

鈥淓veryone was very friendly and genuinely interested in getting to know me as a person during the interview season. There is a ubiquitous sense of respect amongst the residents and faculty members that fosters an ideal learning environment.鈥

 

Meghan Shriver, M.D.Meghan Blythe, MD

Meghan Shriver, M.D., graduated summa cum laude from Kansas State University with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in agricultural economics. She worked for four years in Colorado for a cattle feeding company before making a career change to pursue medicine. While in medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, her extracurricular involvement reflected her interests in rural medicine and medical education. Most notably, she led a team of fellow students in the development of the Clinical Anatomy Mentorship Program, a pilot program incorporating gross anatomy peer teaching within the M3 surgery clerkship. She graduated from University of Kansas School of Medicine with honors for her academic and clinical performance as well as completion of a scholarly project.

In 2021, Dr. Blythe matched as a categorical resident into the general surgery residency at the 黑料天堂 College of Medicine. Outside of medicine, Meghan enjoys live music and grilling. 

What does Dr. Shriver like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama? 

鈥淚 interviewed at many places that would train me well as a future surgeon, but what made 黑料天堂 stand out was the promise that the faculty, residents, and staff would support me both professionally and personally. These are the people whom I want to be surrounded by for the next five years.鈥

 

Elizabeth Krilich, M.D.

Elizabeth Sinanian, M.D.

Elizabeth 鈥淜ril鈥 Sinanian, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from Franciscan University of Steubenville with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. There, she played soccer at the NCAA Division III level for all four years, serving as a captain her senior year and receiving MVP that same year. Her research pursuits during this time were in bioinformatics, where she published her findings on sequence conservations between various enzyme families. In addition, she conducted research at Abbott Laboratories with the FISH program, which concentrates on studying neglected diseases that affect largely developing countries. She was able to publish results on the prevalence of hepatitis delta in Cameroon. In her undergraduate years, she participated in mission outreach to the people that lived in the nearby Appalachia, where she felt called to provide care. 

She matriculated that fall into medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine with her pre-clinical years in 黑料天堂 Bend and her clinical rotations in Indianapolis. She volunteered often with several organizations helping women who suffer from domestic violence, served as president of the 黑料天堂 Bend chapter of American Medical Women鈥檚 Association, and received the Gold Humanism Honor Award. Her research pursuits included working in the University of Notre Dame鈥檚 biomedical engineering department with gold nanoparticles tagging HER2+ cells, and later with the orthopedic department in Indianapolis on hip and knee replacement outcomes. She graduated from Indiana University in 2021, got married, and is now in her categorical intern year at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama College of Medicine. 

What does Dr. Sinanian like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

鈥淚 love the resident culture that the faculty take care to cultivate and carry on through the years. There is an environment of cooperation without malignant competition. I also enjoy the warm weather and southern hospitality.鈥

 

Elizabeth Lockett, M.D.Elizabeth Lockett, MD

Elizabeth 鈥淟ib鈥 Lockett, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from Berry College with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in animal science. While at Berry, she was an honors program student and played both women鈥檚 soccer and women鈥檚 tennis at the varsity level, becoming captain of the soccer team her senior year. Throughout her college career, she earned all-conference honors in soccer and an All-Conference Sportsmanship Award for tennis, in addition to Berry鈥檚 Scholar-Athlete Award all four years of college. In addition to playing soccer and tennis, she worked several jobs at Berry, including research assistant and scholarship fundraiser. Upon graduating in 2013, she moved to northeastern China to teach English, eventually moving home to the U.S. in 2015 to pursue a career in medicine. She began medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in 2017, earning multiple scholarships and awards, including 鈥淪tudent of the Year鈥 at MCG鈥檚 Northwest Campus in 2020 as well as the J. Paul Ferguson Award for Leadership in 2020. She was also inducted into the Gold Humanism Honors Society in 2020. Additionally, she participated in and led trips to Peru during medical school. Her research in medical school focused on the use of point-of-care ultrasound in clinical rotations for medical students (Ultrasound Curriculum Implementation into a State-Wide Family Medicine Clerkship, 2019).

What does Dr. Lockett like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama? 

鈥淲ithout a doubt, it鈥檚 the people. When I interviewed at 黑料天堂, I was blown away by how friendly, welcoming, and genuine each resident and attending was, and how each person seemed full of purpose. I felt like I was joining a family of residents working toward a common goal of becoming technically excellent, patient-centered surgeons. This welcoming 鈥榝amily feel鈥 has only increased as I have moved to Mobile and prepared to begin my training. I am thrilled and honored to be a part of this program.鈥

Morgan Roberts, M.D., graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biomedical sciences. While at Auburn, she participated in multiple research projects within the department of biology and was named to the College of Science and Mathematics Dean鈥檚 List all four years. Following college, Dr. Roberts was able to return to her hometown to attend medical school at the 黑料天堂 College of Medicine. During her time in medical school, she was elected to serve on the LCME Accreditation Committee and served as a founding member and president of the Women in Surgery Interest Group.

What does Dr. Roberts like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

鈥淎s a medical student at 黑料天堂 Alabama, I was given the opportunity to truly 鈥榮ee鈥 the department of surgery firsthand. I was impressed by how capable the residents were both in and out of the operating room and the opportunities provided by the program. But even more so, I was drawn to the people. The comradery amongst the residents and the enthusiasm of the attendings made it hard to imagine choosing anywhere else to complete my residency!鈥

Ciara Jenkins, M.D.Ciara Jenkins, M.D.

Dr. Ciara Jenkins graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While at ODU, she competed as a member of the Equestrian team and served as a peer tutor for various biology and chemistry courses. While in medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School, she excelled academically and held many leadership positions including roles on the Student Government Association and as the Chair of the Student Committee during the LCME Reaccreditation process. She continued her peer tutoring activities, was selected as a Clerkship Chief for the 3rd year General Surgery clerkship and was chosen to receive several departmental and institutional awards for academic excellence, service to others, and leadership. Dr. Jenkins was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society during her fourth year of medical school.

What does Dr. Jenkins like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

During my interview with 黑料天堂, I could immediately tell that everyone was genuinely happy to be part of the program and really enjoyed spending time with their co-residents. It was plain to see how supportive the department is and how much they value their residents both as trainees and individuals with lives outside of the hospital.

 

Alexander McNally, M.D.Alexander McNally, M.D.

Alexander McNally, M.D. graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Health Science. Following college, Dr. McNally was able to return home and attend Eastern Virginia Medical School as a Navy Health Professions Scholarship recipient. During his time in medical school, he participated in multiple Trauma and Acute Care Surgery research studies and was highly involved with community outreach, leading 鈥楳edical Adventures鈥, an organization focused on introducing underprivileged high school students to medicine and the many healthcare career opportunities.

Upon medical school graduation, Dr. McNally commissioned into Active Duty Naval Service as a Lieutenant and completed a General Surgery Internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. Outside of his professional interests, Dr. McNally enjoys hiking, fishing, and cheering for the Florida Gators.

It was clear during my interviews that USA is committed to training excellent Surgeons and does so in a challenging, but completely supportive and collegial environment. I look forward to the experience that lies ahead.

 

Priscilla Roberts, M.D.Priscilla Roberts, M.D.

Dr. Priscilla Roberts graduated magna cum laude from the 黑料天堂 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Minor in Chemistry. A native of Tampa, Florida, she transferred to 黑料天堂 Alabama as a Junior in college after changing career paths from political to medical science. As a member of the American Chemical Society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society, she worked through community efforts to extend educational opportunities to women and children through programs such as Girls Exploring Math and Science and the Boy Scouts of America. Her undergraduate research involved studying fluorescent material, lysosomal dysfunction, and aging. Later research projects included comparing the efficacy and efficiency of ultrasound vs. laparoscopic TAP-blocks. She began medical school in 2018 and served as Secretary of her class and Vice President of the college. She helped establish the Neurosurgery Interest Group and worked for the Surgery Interest Group. In medical school, she served her community through free clinics, COVID-19 vaccination events, housing renovations for the underprivileged, and education workshops.

What does Dr. Roberts like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama? 

The program has demonstrated its ability to train confident and more than capable surgeons while fostering a home for its residents and families. I was drawn to the craft through this program and its people. This program and department set themselves apart, graciously. It is a privilege to join them in serving the area, continue to learn from them and work alongside them.

 

Robert Ross, M.D. Robert Ross MD

Dr. Robert 鈥淩ob鈥 Ross graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a BS in Biology after working for several years in the restaurant industry. He then went on to Louisiana State University Shreveport where he earned a Master of Public Health followed by a Master of Medical Science at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. For medical school, he returned to LSU Health Shreveport where he was heavily involved in both educational improvement as a student member of the medical school curriculum committee and volunteer work as a leader of Support for Humanitarianism through Intercontinental Projects (SHIP), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization partnering with medical personnel in rural western Kenya. In 2019, Dr. Ross matriculated initially as a neurosurgery designated preliminary intern at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, LA and was later offered a position as a PGY2 preliminary general surgery resident. In 2021, he became the first Research Fellow in the Translational and Integrative Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Research (TIGER) Lab at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA. Under the mentorship of Philip Schauer and Vance Albaugh, he studied the role of metabolic surgery in gut-brain pathway alteration, cancer prevention, and biochemical modification and published multiple manuscripts and book chapters. After two years dedicated to research, he joined Vanderbilt General Surgery Program as a preliminary resident. Dr. Ross鈥 amazing family includes his wife, daughter, and dog who have tolerated his long path with grace and support.

In 2024, Dr. Ross was offered the opportunity to join the General Surgery Residency at the 黑料天堂 as a categorical PGY3.

What does Dr. Ross like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

In the years before being offered a position at USA, I met several prior residents and faculty who touted the 黑料天堂 as a hidden gem of resident camaraderie, faculty support, and excellence in surgical training. In the time since, I have found these statements to have been genuine.

Kyle Sheppard, M.D. (Prelim)Kyle Sheppard, M.D.

Kyle Sheppard, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arkansas in 2013 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology. While at the University of Arkansas, he was accepted into the honors college and defended his senior thesis on the 鈥淪tudies of Curcumin and Brartemicin Analogues in Breast Cancer Metastasis.鈥 He also served as president of the Student Health Advisory Committee on campus for two years and participated in global health trips to Thailand, Cambodia, and Honduras. 

During his time at McGovern Medical School, he excelled academically in his preclinical and clinical coursework. He was awarded a Graham Award in Quality Improvement & Patient Safety for his research in pediatric handoffs from the OR to ICU with the department of pediatric surgery. He presented his findings at the Academic Surgical Congress national meeting in 2019. Dr. Melody Zeidan graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004, having double majored in Spanish and in Legal Theory & Practice.  During her undergraduate years, she participated in the University Honors Program as well as the International Honors Program.  She was a founding member of Alpha Delta Sigma Sorority, as well as being active in the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, the UA chapter of Model UN, and multiple university choral groups.  She then attended law school at Vanderbilt University, where she was a Chancellor鈥檚 Scholar.  During law school, she was a member of the Headnotes a capella choir and participated in the Intramural Appellate Advocacy Competition.  After earning her J.D. in 2007, Dr. Zeidan returned to Alabama, where she practiced labor and employment law for nine years before pursuing a new career in medicine.  

She attended the 黑料天堂 College of Medicine, where she was active in the Student Run Free Clinic, as well as serving two years on the operating committee of the Society of Student Run Free Clinics.  She also served in leadership roles within her chapters of the American Medical Women鈥檚 Association and the Student National Medical Association, as well as the Medical Spanish Interest Group.  During medical school, she was selected for membership in both the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

I can鈥檛 say enough about the emphasis that the program places on physicians helping each other succeed.  There is an all-encompassing atmosphere of encouragement and support, with both residents and attendings lifting each other up and pushing each other to achieve.  That kind of collegiality and focus on professional as well as personal success is really rare.

While at Auburn, she participated in research through a national, non-profit organization, ACEing Autism by volunteering as a tennis instructor to investigate motor skill outcomes in adults with developmental disabilities following an 8-week adapted tennis program.  Following college, she attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she continued research through the colorectal division of the department of surgery leading to a presentation at the Academic Surgical Congress in 2023. Her leadership roles included serving as an orientation leader, anatomy teaching assistant, and learning community representative, elected by her classmates. Outside of medicine, Madi enjoys playing sand volleyball, golf, and cooking.

Dr. Aidan Gilbert graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.  Following graduation, he attained a Master鈥檚 in Public Health with a focus in epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He then began working as a biostatistician within the Division of Hematology & Oncology at UAB Hospital where he received the Seng-jaw Soong Award for Excellence in biostatistics.  He then decided to pursue a career as a physician and matriculated into the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama Whiddon College of Medicine in 2019.  While at the College of Medicine, Dr. Gilbert helped to create and teach a course that taught fellow students SAS statistical coding language.  Dr. Gilbert remains an active researcher.  He has authored multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts on topics including hemorrhage control, cancer care, and thoracic surgery.  He is currently a co-investigator on a Society of Thoracic Surgeons funded project utilizing the General Thoracic Surgery Database assessing the interplay between smoking and surgical technique on perioperative outcomes in esophagectomy.

Dr. Karl Jacob Fischer graduated from Benedictine College in Atchison, KS with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry. While at Benedictine, he was a member of the men鈥檚 soccer team playing mostly in the central midfield. His team accomplishments include 2012 HAAC regular season and tournament champions, 2013 HAAC regular season champions, and bids to the 2012 and 2013 NAIA National Tournament, going to the Round of 16 in 2013. Individually, he was voted as team captain in 2012 and 2013, 2013 HAAC First-Team All Conference and 2012 HAAC Second-Team All Conference. He also trained and played with the Kansas City Brass and, later, the Bugeaters FC in Omaha, NE. While at Benedictine, he attended mission trips to Belize twice and a medical mission trip in the Philippines. Following undergrad, he attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center, earning his Master鈥檚 of Science in Pathology and Microbiology after successfully defending his thesis 鈥淭he Role of Inflammatory Monocytes in Post-influenza Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pneumonia.鈥 While in Omaha, he coached youth soccer teams for Elkhorn Soccer Club and was a clinical research coordinator at the Urology Cancer Center, helping patients with renal, bladder, and prostate cancers on over 100 clinical trials.

He began medical school at the University of Kansas-Wichita in 2020. While in medical school he was a member of the International Outreach group, organizing a trip for medical students to Guatemala. Before medical school, he diligently served his community as an auxiliary volunteer, youth teacher, and student coordinator for several nonprofit organizations. Interested in sustainable health initiatives and data- driven care, he would earn a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the Rollins School of Public Health. While at the University of Kentucky she was a member of the Robinson Scholars program, accepting a full scholarship and participating in service opportunities to give back to her community. In this program she had the opportunity to help first-generation Appalachian students, like herself, work toward their goals of attending college. She continued to pursue her Masters, as well as graduate teaching certificate in clinical anatomy. She attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine. During her time there she served as a curriculum representative, peer tutor, and medical student teacher in the discipline of surgery. Dr. Madison Hoffman Thrower graduated summa cum laude from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in chemistry, and she later obtained her medical degree at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport. While at LaTech, she was a member of the Student Government Association where she served as Chair of the Community Outreach Committee through which she had the privilege of organizing community-wide events involving 600+ college students and citizens of the surrounding town. In college, she also served as secretary of the Student Advancement Team alongside the Alumni Affairs office where she enjoyed fostering relationships between the current college students and university alumni. Additionally, Madison worked as a Collegiate Ministerial Intern at Temple Baptist Church. In this role, Madison worked with many incoming freshmen along with students of all ages, serving as the liaison between students and leadership 鈥 one of her greatest passions.

Throughout medical school, Madison served regularly with a community outreach program called the HUB ministries where she was blessed to work with people in need of food, shelter, and clothes. She also served on the Student Leadership Council in medical school and volunteered with the gardening club. Much is to be valued about USA, but the genuine heart of the people who make up this healing institution are the ingredient that makes this place like none other. My husband and I prayed for a program that would serve as a positive learning environment and where we would be supported both in the workplace and in life outside of work, too. Both were found here! Moving away from family was a huge step in faith for us, but I feel overwhelmingly humbled and blessed by the opportunity to learn from and be part of the gracious USA family.

Dr. Jessica Glas graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with high distinction and a minor in Mathematics. During her undergraduate years, she received the Chancellor Award in 2016 and the Outstanding Undergraduate Award of Merit in 2018. A dedicated member of the Husker Equestrian Team, Dr. Glas served as team president, won an individual Zone championship in 2019, and competed at Nationals. She also trained off-the-track Thoroughbreds as jumpers, earning the USHJA Zone Horse of the Year title in 2018.

Dr. Glas attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as an Air Force Health Professions Scholar and excelled in Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, finishing at the top of her flight in 2021. She is committed to community service, having volunteered extensively with Moving Veterans Forward and participated in the 50 Mile March fundraising event in 2021 and 2022, which earned her the Service-Learning Community Engagement Award in 2023.

Dr. Joshua 鈥淛.J.鈥 Jenkins grew up in Charleston, SC. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Coastal Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Dr. Jenkins attended the University of 黑料天堂 Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, where he continued to leverage his strong leadership skills, serving as both SGA President and Vice President. He mentored pre-medical students through the Prisma Health MedEx Academy and underclassmen at SOMG through the Mentorship and Professionalism Program. Additionally, he served as an Anatomy Teaching Assistant. Dr. Jenkins conducted research across multiple departments, including Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Pathology, earning awards and publications for his work. He was also inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

In his free time, Dr. Jenkins enjoys weightlifting, making music, reading self-help books and psychological thrillers, cooking, and collecting sneakers.

What does Dr. Jenkins like most about being a resident at the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama?

黑料天堂 Alabama has provided me with an opportunity to sharpen my sword as I prepare for the future. Their track record speaks for itself. The volume, diverse patient population, and complexity of cases allows me to develop into a competent surgeon. I also love the emphasis on family. The residents, attendings, and coordinators are extremely supportive and treat me with the utmost respect.

Marjorie Jones, M.D., grew up in Birmingham, Alabama before attending Pepperdine University where she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. While there, she was inducted into the Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society. Before pursuing a career in medicine, Marjorie taught middle school math in Los Angeles, California. She then went on to attend medical school at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. As a third-year medical student, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Marjorie is involved in a variety of research projects with her most recent publication being a retrospective review of 30 years of pediatric clinical trial radiotherapy dose constraints to support standardization for normal tissue sparing and ultimately reduce radiation toxicities in the pediatric population. Outside of medicine, Marjorie enjoys spending time with family and friends and going for walks with her pup.

What does Dr. Jones like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

I am excited to be part of the USA general surgery team working alongside the most hardworking and caring faculty members and residents around! I know that I will get excellent surgical training in a program that fosters both professional and personal growth. I am excited to see where this year takes me!

Dr. Margaret 鈥淢at鈥 Thames studied at Auburn University, where she received the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship. She graduated in 2019 with Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in History. During her tenure at Auburn, she was employed by the university as a biology tutor for the Student Athlete Department, as well as an MCAT readiness instructor by the College of Science and Math. She both volunteered and worked as a Project Coordinator for IMPACT, an organization that connects students with various local agencies in need of volunteers.

Following graduation, Dr. Thames returned to Mobile to work as a Medical Assistant for The Orthopedic Group, where she gained valuable clinical experience providing patient-centered care. The following year she was accepted to the University of 黑料天堂 Alabama College of Medicine. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted many of her lectures, meetings, and organizations to an online format. Despite this shift, Dr. Thames still became an active member in many interest groups and volunteered with the Student Run Free Clinic, as allowed by school policies. Her second year she was elected to be a House leader, where she worked under the umbrella of the Health and Wellness Department to bring back engaging community activities that were lost during the pandemic. During her clinical years, she developed a passion for surgery and took on active leadership roles in the Surgery Interest Group and the Women in Surgery Interest Group. She has contributed to various research projects and has two first-author publications currently. She presented her research, 鈥淒iabetes in Trauma: A Potential Gateway to a Medical Home鈥 at the 黑料天堂eastern Surgical Conference in 2024. She is a native Mobilian and has volunteered with the Litter Ladies, whose proceeds benefit local children鈥檚 home Wilmer Hall, as well as the Little Sister鈥檚 of the Poor Lawn Party.

What does Dr. Thames like most about being a resident at the 黑料天堂?

I most enjoy the collaborative approach to patient care; I truly enjoy working with my team and feel like I get to provide a crucial role in care delivery, even as the intern. Everyone is great at teaching, and I am always learning.
