Using Politics to Better People鈥檚 Lives
People often malign politics, Dana Abrams鈥 chosen profession, as a dirty business. How would she reply to those critics?
鈥淲ell, I would say to a certain extent you鈥檙e not wrong,鈥 she said with a laugh. 鈥淏ut in the bigger picture, it鈥檚 more than that. If you understand politics and you understand how politics works, you can make it work for you to help better people鈥檚 lives.鈥
That鈥檚 why, when she transferred from another college to 黑料天堂 halfway through her undergraduate career, she switched her major from psychology to political science. 鈥淚t became apparent to me that politics was everywhere. It鈥檚 essential for everyone to have at least some understanding.鈥
After graduation, she began work on a Master of Public Administration degree at 黑料天堂. 鈥淚f political science taught me the theories and practice of government,鈥 she said, 鈥減ublic administration has taught me how to make the government work better.鈥
鈥淚t became apparent to me that politics was everywhere.鈥
After completing her master鈥檚 studies, she planned to continue to a doctorate, probably at a university in New York, New Jersey or Washington 鈥 close to the seats of power. Eventually, she鈥檇 like to hold a policy analysis job focusing on healthcare or environmental policy with a government agency.
Abrams has never wanted to run for office. She preferred working behind the scenes, with less personal interaction. 鈥淏ut the major got me used to talking to people,鈥 she said, 鈥渁nd I鈥檓 building up my communication skills. In the process, I kind of opened up. I became less shy.
鈥淚鈥檝e been more talkative with people, reaching out, debating.鈥 With another laugh, she added, 鈥淚 do a lot of that.鈥
Ultimately, she said, 鈥淚 want to use the skills that I鈥檓 gaining here to be able to be an advocate for other people. Even if I don鈥檛 change the entire system, I鈥檒l be contributing.鈥
