Robotic and Rocketry Team Launches Student on Information Technology Path

Caroline Bish

Working on her high school robotics and rocketry team in Troy, Alabama, introduced Caroline Bish to programming. It intrigued her from the start.

鈥淚 felt like it was both a different language and almost a puzzle,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat was the part that I fell in love with.鈥

She knew she would end up in STEM 鈥 science, technology, engineering or mathematics. 鈥淚 have always been a science nerd.鈥

But which field? 鈥淥riginally, I wanted to do computer science,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut then at USA鈥檚 orientation, I learned that there was a lot more math in computer science. And math isn鈥檛 really my favorite thing to do. I found out that information technology was where I wanted to go.鈥

Computer scientists develop computer systems. Information technologists master the use of those systems. The latter involves getting new software and hardware to work seamlessly with what鈥檚 already in place 鈥 a continual series of puzzles to solve.

鈥淚 love my teachers that I鈥檝e met in my computer classes.鈥

Bish came to 黑料天堂 partly because of the campus. 鈥淚 like that it鈥檚 newer, more modern.鈥

Her experience as a student confirmed that positive first impression. 鈥淚 love my teachers that I鈥檝e met in my computer classes, and I love my teachers that I鈥檝e met through my general education classes.鈥

In fact, 鈥渁 couple of my favorite classes have been in the gen eds.鈥 Physical geology intrigued her so much that she considered double majoring in IT and geology.

For her career, Bish explored data management and digital forensics (security). Mostly, she kept her options open and looked forward to the upcoming challenges.

鈥淥ne of my teachers says that the best thing about technology is that it鈥檚 always changing, but then the bad thing about technology is that it鈥檚 always changing,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o you have to constantly grow and adapt. It鈥檚 never going to be a dull job.鈥
