Performance Proceeds Donated to Rape Crisis Center
Posted on May 17, 2017
More than $600 was raised and recently donated to the Mobile Rape Crisis Center from the proceeds of the “Vagina Monologues” presentation held in March at the University of Alabama. Cast members including Title IX Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students Dr. Krista Harrell and students visited with Chandra Brown, executive director of Lifelines Counseling Center and her staff. Brown manages the Rape Crisis Center.
“We are extremely grateful that you have designated your funds from the program to support the many women we serve at the Mobile Rape Crisis Center,” Brown said. “We are able to do some exciting work due to the Alabama Prison Rape Elimination Act and the state’s Telehealth initiatives for rural communities. Thank you for this donation. We appreciate the support, time and dedication to women in need.”
The “Vagina Monologues” performance is designed to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. Each year, during V-Day Week, students perform and later donate the proceeds to the Mobile Rape Crisis Center. Some of the students will expand their support by volunteering this upcoming school year.
Each of the students in attendance at the check presentation introduced themselves and talked about how participating in the “Vagina Monologues” performance has changed their lives and given them a bigger commitment to combating violence against women and girls.
“We are proud of the work our students, who I call ’my warriors,’ are doing by raising awareness for women in crisis and supporting the Mobile Rape Crisis Center with a $616 donation,” said Harrell. “They have changed minds, hearts, and found their own voices while educating others. And, they are ready to plan for next year and raise more proceeds for the cause.”
