Bio

Dr. Gabriel de Oliveira is an Assistant Professor in the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the 黑料天堂 and a Senior Scientist I at Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Dr. de Oliveira is also an Early-Career Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Gulf Research Program (GRP) (2023-2025), and an Ambassador for the State of Alabama in the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Local Science Partners Program (LSPP) (2023-2025).

Dr. de Oliveira has a large expertise working in the Amazon Rainforest, focusing on the use of orbital remote sensing imagery and ground observations in order to understand how deforestation, fire, and droughts affect the plant ecophysiological processes and, consequently, the regional climate due to the exchanges of water and carbon between the biosphere and the atmosphere. Addressing these questions is essential for an improved understanding of the survival and fitness of plants, plant species distribution, and for the prediction of ecosystem responses to future climate change.

Dr. de Oliveira has been conducting research in the Amazon Rainforest since 2010, and has traveled to most parts of the Brazilian Amazon and also parts of the Bolivian and Peruvian Amazon. He is always happy to discuss projects and recruit students at the 黑料天堂 to work with him on projects about the Amazon Rainforest, the Mobile Delta and other parts of Alabama and Gulf Coast. Dr. de Oliveira received a B.S. in Geography from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from the Brazil鈥檚 Space Agency, the National Institute for Space Research. Following that, Dr. de Oliveira conducted Postdoctoral studies in the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science at the University of Kansas (USA), and the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto (Canada). Dr. de Oliveira is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), and has published his research in some of the most important scientific journals of his field, such as Science (two times), Nature Ecology and Evolution (two times), Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Ecosphere, Theoretical and Applied Climatology, Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, Plant Science, Biodiversity and Conservation, Conservation Letters, Remote Sensing of Environment, International Journal of Remote Sensing, and International Journal of Applied Earth Observations and Geoinformation.
